SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION

This examination will consist of two parts:

I.          There will be an evaluation of the candidates’ training and experience.  Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will receive a rating based on an evaluation of their training and experience against the background of the duties of the position.

All candidates should submit an application on or before the last filing date.  After a preliminary review of qualifications, all approved candidates will be required to complete and return a questionnaire describing their relevant training and experience. The rating of training and experience will be based upon the information candidates provide in the questionnaire. Ambiguity and vagueness will not be resolved in the candidate’s favor. Additional information concerning a candidate’s training and experience will not be accepted after the questionnaire has been rated.

II.        Spanish Language Proficiency Test (Speaking):  Candidates who pass the written examination and do not qualify for waiver*** of the Spanish language proficiency test will be scheduled for the language test as the needs of the service require.  This part of the examination will be administered during the work week (Monday- Friday) and is designed to evaluate speaking proficiency in the Spanish language at a level appropriate for the position(s) being filled. *A candidate may qualify for a waiver of the Spanish language proficiency test if a comparable or higher level Spanish language test was previously passed and administered by the Suffolk County Department of Human Resources, Personnel and Civil Service.

Candidates must pass both parts of the examination in order to be eligible for appointment.  Rank on the eligible list will be determined solely on the basis of the score received on the training and experience evaluation plus veterans’ credits where applicable.
