Q. Is Suffolk County residency required for taking examinations?

A. Suffolk County residency is not required to take examinations, however some non-county jurisdictions, such as schools, libraries, etc., may give preference to residents. For employment with Suffolk County Government residency is usually required.

Q. When do I have to meet the minimum qualifications for an examination?

A. As of the examination date unless otherwise specified.

Q. How is part time experience counted in meeting experience requirement in the minimum qualifications?

A. It is pro-rated.

Q. Do I need an official college transcript to submit with my application?

A. No, an unofficial transcript is acceptable.

Q. What is the application fee and is it refundable or transferable?

A. See the examination announcement for the application processing fee. It can vary depending on the type of examination. The application processing fee is not refundable or transferable.

Q. Is there an application fee waiver available?

A. Certain persons may be eligible for a fee waiver. See the examination announcement for details.

Q. What study material should I use?

A. Candidates may find information in the publication "How to Take a Written Test " helpful. This publication is available online at: www.cs.ny.gov/testing/localtestguides.cfm. For some examinations a specific test guide may be available. See the examination announcement for details.

Q. When I apply for an examination when will I be notified of my scheduling information?

A. You should receive your scheduling information about a week to ten days before the examination date. You may also view your room assignment and examination site information on our home page under "Candidate Exam Room Assignment Search" seven days prior to the examination date.

Q. Where are the examinations held?

A. They are usually held at Suffolk Community College, depending on availability. Various public schools in Eastern and Western Suffolk County may also be used.

Q. What time do examinations begin?

A. 9:00 am

Q. How much time will I have to complete the examination?

A. Maximum time allowances vary by examination. It can be any time between 3 and 8 hours.

Q. Can I apply for more than one examination on an exam date?

A. Yes, you can apply for more than one examination on an exam date, however the maximum time to complete all examinations is 8 hours. You cannot be re-scheduled for an examination on another day.

Q. How do I change the address that I have on file with the Civil Service Department?

A. You may send in a letter requesting that we change your address or change your address online on your account information.

Q. What if I am on active military duty on the date of the examination?

A. Request Special Accommodation on your application stating the earliest date you will be available to take the test and include documentation or call Civil Service at 631-853-5500 to arrange for an alternate test date.
