DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs routine
work involving the performance of standardized clerical procedures. Detailed instructions and close supervision
are received at the beginning of work and on new assignments, but regular
routine assignments may be performed more independently and some initiative and
judgment are utilized as experience is gained.
Assignments include the use of standard office equipment which does not
necessitate previous vocational training.
Employees may make arithmetic or other checks upon work of other
employees for accuracy, but do not exercise direct supervision over
others. Work is subject to close
supervision and is reviewed by superiors on completion both for content and
accuracy. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Posts simple data to various departmental payroll or
similar records and compiles reports based on tabulations of posted data and
simple arithmetical computations;
Receives and screens
applications, vouchers or other forms for accuracy of content and compliance
with procedural and regulatory requirements;
Sorts, indexes and
files documents, reports, correspondence and other material;
Makes simple title and
tax searches;
Opens, sorts and
distributes mail;
Receives and records
receipts of payments; accounts for and tallies daily receipts;
Collects and credits
bills;
Gives general
information regarding departmental procedures orally in response to personal or
telephone inquiries and answers routine inquires by form letter;
May operate a variety
of simple office equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of general office terminology, procedures, equipment and
clerical techniques; some knowledge of business English, spelling and
arithmetic; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;
ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed
departmental routines; ability to make arithmetical computations and
tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed; ability to establish
effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors and the public;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high
