DISTINGUISHING
FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is involved in performing
complex word processing duties as a member of a word processing center or as in
independent worker whose assignments are primarily related to word
processing. duties cover the more
difficult aspects of word processing, such as files creation and manipulation,
and/or advanced text processing which includes formatting, repagination and
intricate revisions. Responsibility may
be included for setting up the equipment to reproduce standard forms. The level of work is comparable to that found
i senior clerical titles The incumbent
is expected to develop some familiarity with the terminology of the particular
department, but the emphasis of the work is on the use of the word processing
equipment rather than in-depth knowledge of departmental functions. Most work is done independently. Assignments of unusual difficulty are
referred to a Word Processing Supervisor, an administrative supervisor or the
equipment manufacturer. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops
new applications of the word processing equipment, creates files and formats
and sets up equipment to reproduce standard forms;
Merges
selected file records with test to produce integrated documents, reports or
letters;
Plans
the format for, and produces the more complicated documents such as lengthy
technical, legal and statistical reports from complex source material;
Logs
incoming assignments;
Contacts
the originators of assignments to explain the capabilities and limitations of
the word processing equipment, and to discuss requirements for final documents;
Operates
peripheral word processing equipment, such as printers, mag card readers,
diskette drives, etc;
May
instruct clerical workers in the use of the word processing equipment.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the word processing equipment in
use, including files and text to processing, formatting, scrolling, archiving,
repagination and the setting up of equipment to reproduce standard forms;
thorough knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling; skill in typewriting;
ability to think in a logical manner, including the use of deductive reasoning;
ability to produce a quality document from rough drafts and various sources;
ability to proofread accurately and make appropriate changes; ability to follow
written and oral instructions; ability to work under the pressure of a
deadline;ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
attentiveness to detail; physical condition commensurate with the demands of
the position.

Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year
of experience in the use of specialized word processing equipment
NOTE: Completion of a certificate course in word
processing at a New York State or regionally accredited college or business
school will be substituted for the one (1) year of experience.
