DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs entry-level specialized work relating to applying statutes and laws
governing the practices and procedures of Traffic Court functions. Trainees receive on-the-job training
while performing duties of a limited but increasingly responsible nature. The
work differs from that of a Traffic Court Specialist Trainee in that the
incumbent must also communicate with Spanish-speaking motorists and assist them
in their contacts with the agency. The
incumbent assists with work performed
according to standard procedures prescribed by state law, judicial
determination and administrative directives.
Work involves contact with attorneys and the general public regarding
court functions and procedures. The incumbent works closely with
higher-level Traffic Court Specialists, and work is subject to review through
consultation and examination of work performed. After one (1) year of continuous service as a
permanent Traffic Court Specialist Trainee (Spanish Speaking), the incumbent
achieves permanent competitive status as a Traffic Court Specialist (Spanish
Speaking) without further examination. Does
related work as required.
Attends
training sessions and participates in conferences and staff meetings;
Studies and reviews
literature and materials related to NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law, NYS Criminal
Procedure Law, NYS Civil Practice Law and Rules, and Suffolk County TPVA rules
and procedures;
Assists Spanish-speaking motorists in activities related to the agency's
function;
Assists in
preparing case information and files, and organizing cases according to court
calendar;
Generates
letters and notices to violators;
Assists
in scheduling the court calendar, coordinating Police Officers and court’s
availability;
Accesses
DMV database records to obtain background information for prosecutors and
judges;
Reads
and summarizes case documents and information for prosecutors;
Explains
rules and policies to motorists;
Enters data into electronic
files;
Verifies
correctness of entered data; detects and corrects errors;
Proofreads
documents for adherence to court procedures;
Calculates,
collects, and records fines, penalties, and fees;
Communicates
with Police Officers and court personnel regarding court policies and
procedures;
Records
disposition, fines, and other case data in electronic files;
Maintains
electronic case records.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of general office practices, procedures,
terminology, and equipment; good knowledge of business English,
spelling and arithmetic; working knowledge of legal terminology and court
proceedings; ability to type
rapidly and accurately; ability to identify and correct errors; ability
to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to
read, write and converse fluently in Spanish; ability to understand and
interpret written material, including court rules, polices, and procedures; ability
to make decisions in accordance with state statutes relating to court
procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with attorneys, judges, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Completion of sixty (60) credits from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
There will be a qualifying Spanish
language examination.
