DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for performing specialized clerical duties inherent in maintaining a law library.  Under general supervision, an employee in this class independently performs difficult clerical work in the cataloging, maintaining and updating of a law library.  The employee receives general instructions from an attorney in charge.  In the absence of direct supervision, the law library clerk performs more technical clerical work, requiring a higher degree of skill, experience, knowledge of legal terminology and independent judgement that is necessary in entry level clerical classes.  Unusual or very difficult procedures and questions are referred to the attorney in charge for decision.  Work is reviewed by an attorney through personal conferences and periodic observations of the effectiveness of clerical operations.  Performs related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Receives and logs all acquisitions and updates of all volumes in a law library;

            Follows detailed instructions from publishers to update existing volumes;

            Contacts publishers and salespersons of law books to keep law library current and to order new volumes;

            Maintains and may establish in-house card catalog of legal opinions and decisions of pertinent lawsuits for attorneys' use;

            Maintains integrity of the collection by insuring against unauthorized removal of volumes;

            Maintains and reshelves books.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of law library and law office terminology, general clerical procedures and equipment; good knowledge of English, spelling and legal termi­nology; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers and the public.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard high school and two years of clerical experi­ence, one of which must have been in a law office or law library.

 

            NOTE:  Relevant additional education from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
