JUSTICE COURT CASHIER 0053
Under direct supervision, an employee in this class
receives money and issues receipts either through the mail or from persons who
come to the Justice Court. The duties of
this position require facility in counting money, in giving change and in the
proper procedures of receipting fines, fees and bail which are performed
according to established and defined procedures. Duties are of a more complex nature than
those of Clerk or Cashier, since the incumbent must enter designated funds
appropriately, prepare deposits, review bank statements and produce reports in
a specified court information system. The incumbent is responsible for properly
receiving and receipting large sums of money. The incumbent may be personally
responsible for monetary errors which are made in the receipting process. Work is checked by daily reconciliations and
system-generated or manual audit reports. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Receives
cash, checks or money orders in payment of fines, fees, bail and issues
receipts;
Enters
summons information;
Enters received
funds appropriately, prepares deposits, reviews bank statements and produces
reports on a specified court information system;
Validates
outstanding violations and issues receipts;
Mails
out or issues on demand releases and satisfactions of violation in return for
fines and fees paid;
Records
and balances all daily transactions for fines and fees paid in a specified
court information system;
Accesses
New York State Unified Court System programs to file monthly audit reports;
Gives
information and explanations over the telephone or in person concerning Justice
Court operations and status of pending and outstanding violations and amounts
of fines imposed for violation type;
Operates
typewriter or basic office equipment including computers and assists in
opening, sorting, collecting and routing mail.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Some knowledge of principles and practices of cashiering;
some knowledge of business arithmetic; some knowledge of office procedures,
methods and equipment with particular reference to receiving and accounting for
the receipt of cash; skill in the operation of computer programs used in the
Justice Court, cash registers and other office machines; ability to receive
cash and make change with accuracy and speed; ability to make rapid and
accurate arithmetic computations; physical condition commensurate with the
demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2)
years of experience in the maintenance of financial records and accounts, of
which one (1) year must have been as a cashier, in the receipt and recording of
payments or in the maintenance of justice court records.
