DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs specialized work relating to Traffic Court functions, requiring some knowledge of statutes and laws governing the practices and procedures of Traffic Courts.  All work is performed according to standard procedures prescribed by state law, judicial determination and administrative directives.  Work involves contact with attorneys and the general public regarding court functions and procedures. Work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Traffic Court Specialist or administrative supervisor.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

                Prepares case information and files, and organizes cases according to court calendar;

            Generates letters and notices to violators;

            Schedules the court calendar, coordinating Police Officer’s and court’s availability;

            Accesses DMV database records to obtain background information for prosecutors and judges;

            Reads and summarizes case documents and information for prosecutors;

            Explains rules and policies to motorists;

            Enters data into electronic files;

            Verifies correctness of entered data; detects and corrects errors;

            Proofreads documents for adherence to court procedures;

            Calculates, collects, and records fines, penalties, and fees;

            Communicates with Police Officers and court personnel regarding court policies and procedures;

            Records disposition, fines, and other case data in electronic files;

            Maintains electronic case records.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of general office practices, procedures, terminology, and equipment; good knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; good know­ledge of legal terminology and court proceedings; ability to type rapidly and accurately; ability to identify and correct errors; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to understand and interpret written material, including court rules, polices, and procedures; ability to make decisions in accordance with state statutes relating to court procedures; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, judges, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Completion of sixty (60) credits from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State, and one (1) year of experience in the maintenance of computerized records or files.
