DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises a number of Traffic Court Specialists
engaged in processing and recording
legal documents, and performing specialized work that
requires thorough knowledge of Traffic Court proceedings and understanding of
legal terminology. All work is performed
according to standard procedures prescribed by state law, judicial determination
and administrative directives.
Supervision is exercised over Traffic Court Specialists and general
clerical employees, and includes guiding them in proper procedures and in
problem solving. Work involves contact
with attorneys and the general public regarding court functions and procedures.
Work is performed under the supervision of a Traffic Court Supervisor or other administrative
supervisor. Does related work as required.
Supervises
and trains personnel in the maintenance of traffic court files, courtroom
correspondence, and other clerical duties;
Reviews daily docket’s case history
and ensures all pleadings are with the appropriate files;
Accesses DMV database records to
obtain background information for prosecutors and judges;
Collects, marks, and maintains
exhibits and other evidence, and returns upon completion of
proceedings;
Oversees
and trains Traffic Court Specialists on notices of trials and other related
court correspondence;
Supervises the maintenance of traffic court files;
Answers correspondence pertaining to
the Traffic Court;
Analyzes
legal documents and papers related to motor vehicle and parking cases and
certificates of convictions to aid prosecutors and judges in courtrooms;
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of general office practices, procedures,
terminology, and equipment; good knowledge of business English,
arithmetic; thorough knowledge of legal terminology and traffic court
proceedings; ability to type
rapidly and accurately; ability to identify and correct errors; ability
to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to
understand and interpret written material, including traffic court rules, polices,
and procedures; ability
to maintain accurate records and files; ability to assign,
supervise and review the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with attorneys, judges, co-workers, supervisors, and the
general public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Completion of sixty (60) credits
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State, and three (3) years of experience in the maintenance of
computerized records or files.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Traffic Court Specialist.
