DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class supervises the specialized and
responsible work
relating to Traffic Court functions
for the Suffolk County Traffic & Parking Violations Agency. The incumbent supervises either the
Adjudication or Operations Division and is responsible for coordinating
the assignment of daily duties, requiring good knowledge of statutes and laws
governing the practices and procedures of Traffic Courts. All work is performed
according to standard procedures prescribed by state law, judicial
determination and administrative directives. Work involves contact
with attorneys and the general public regarding court functions and procedures,
and requires
considerable initiative and judgment.
Work is performed under general administrative supervision through conferences,
observations, periodic reports and the effectiveness of operation. Does
related work as required.
Assists the Traffic
Court Administrator with the assignment of daily duties for court staff;
Coordinates the activities of the
courtrooms;
Maintains
time and attendance records and daily productivity reports;
Answers
employee questions and trains new employees;
Evaluates
the work of Senior Traffic Court Specialists and Traffic Court Specialists for
completion and accuracy;
Reviews
orders and makes recommendations for creating and editing orders due to changes
in the law;
Assists
the public and attorneys by providing information about the status of cases and
the operations of the Agency;
Assists
in developing procedures for the
collection of revenue and associated statistical reports for the department;
Participates
in meetings and serves on various committees.

Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of office management,
organization and supervision; good knowledge of business English,
arithmetic; thorough knowledge of legal terminology and traffic court
proceedings; ability to type
rapidly and accurately; ability to identify and correct errors; ability
to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to maintain accurate records and
files; ability to understand and interpret written material,
including traffic court rules, polices, and procedures; ability to multi-task,
set priorities, and handle critical situations; ability to assign, supervise
and review the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and
high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with attorneys, judges, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Completion of sixty (60) credits
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State, and five (5) years of experience in the maintenance of
computerized records or files.
PROMOTIONAL
Two
(2) years of permanent competitive status as a Senior Traffic Court Specialist.
