DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class transcribes dictation which includes the use of medical terminology.  The incumbent performs work similar to that of a clerk typist with the exception that the incumbent must be familiar with medical terminology, medical format and procedures, and formal medical documents.  Work is performed in accordance with established procedures.  Routine assignments are performed with some independence.  Transcribed material is reviewed upon completion for content and accuracy, and related clerical work is periodically reviewed for accuracy.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Transcribes and proofreads dictation of medical reports such as autopsy and neuro-pathology reports;

          Uses reference materials to facilitate the accuracy, clarity and completeness of reports;

          Prepares routine medical forms in connection with the work of the Medical Examiner's office;

          Checks, proofreads and files documents to verify accuracy and completeness;

          Operates standard office machines, including a personal computer.       

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS         

Good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pathology; good knowledge of English usage, grammar, punctuation and style; knowledge of the guidelines and practices of medical transcription; ability to use designated reference materials; ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; ability to make decisions in accordance with department policy, and applicable laws and regulations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of experience as a medical transcriptionist  transcribing dictation by physicians and other health‑care professionals regarding patient assessments, workups, therapeutic procedures, diagnoses, post mortem examinations or neuro-pathology analyses.
