FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general
supervision, an employee in this class performs specialized clerical work with
some technical responsibility in the classification and maintenance of medical
case history files and the compilation of related statistical reports. The
incumbent assists Spanish speaking clients by interpreting Department policy,
providing assistance with health related forms and translating medical
information. Work is performed under the
supervision of a medical supervisor who is available for consultation.
Performance is evaluated through the review of medical records maintained. Does
related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists Spanish speaking clients in
filling out forms, and in understanding the department's policies;
Receives, files and reviews medical
records for consistency and completeness; contacts various offices in order to
alleviate problems with incomplete or incorrect forms so that records can be
completed;
Codes and classifies all cases as to
anatomical diagnosis, causes of death and circumstances surrounding death;
Compiles and maintains statistical
reports based on medical records kept.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
medical record keeping principles and practices including familiarity with
standard nomenclature and classification; good knowledge of medical and
anatomical terminology and disease etiology required for the proper
classification and maintenance of medical case records; ability to read and
converse fluently in English and Spanish; ability to make arithmetic
computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed; ability to
prepare statistical reports based on the analysis of medical records; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a standard senior
high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2)
years of medical clerical experience.
NOTE: Additional
education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or
registration by NY State, or education from a technical school in medical
coding, billing, or a related field, will be substituted for experience on a
year-for-year basis.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
There will be a qualifying Spanish language examination.
