DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class establishes and/or maintains the medical records filing system of a medical facility. Positions involve specialized clerical work that requires thorough knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases coding system and understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and vital statistics.  Records are subject to audit for accuracy and completeness.  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative supervisor and a medical director who is available for consultation as necessary.  Supervision may be exercised over one or more Medical Records Clerks or general clerical employees.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Establishes and/or maintains the medical records filing system of the facility;

            Supervises the maintenance of medical records, checking for accuracy and completeness and obtaining any missing documentation;

            Codes and indexes according to current diagnostic classification system;

            Compiles, prepares, types and maintains statistical reports based upon facility records;

            Processes requests from outside agencies for medical information relating to patients;

            Records minutes at medical staff conferences;

            Supervises clerical employees who assist in the maintenance of medical records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of medical record keeping principles and practices including standard diagnostic classification; thorough knowledge of medical and anatomical terminology and disease etiology as required for the proper classification and maintenance of medical case records; thorough knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to patient record confidentiality; ability to make arithmetical computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed; ability to prepare statis­tical reports based on the analysis of medical records; ability to plan and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Medical Records Clerk or Medical Records Clerk (Spanish Speaking).
