DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class learns to perform technical and specialized work involving bindery work, the preparation of printing plates and the duplication of forms, drawings and typed material by operation of offset process duplicating machinery.  Assignments are received in the form of documents to be duplicated. Thorough instruction in each required process is given by an experienced operator, and close supervision is exercised until the work has been learned. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Burns and develops offset plates;

            Installs sensitized plate, sets machine for size and thickness of paper, regulates ink flow and rate of feed, and makes all necessary adjustments to achieve desired quality of work;

            Maintains offset machinery;

            Cleans and treats plates after use;

            Keeps records related to machine operation and production;

            Operates auxiliary machines such as collator, paper puncher, perforator, binder, stitcher, folder, cutter, wrapper, numberer and padder;

            May participate in the operation of high speed copying equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of the operation, limitations and adaptabilities of offset duplicating equipment and machinery; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high speed duplicating equipment; working knowledge of paper stocks, inks, chemicals and related printing materials; working knowledge of machine adjustments required in the performance of offset and high speed duplicating work; ability to learn the operation of offset duplicating equipment; ability to learn the techniques required in the preparation of metal plates; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
