DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs technical and specialized work involving preparation of printing plates and/or operation and maintenance of offset duplicating machinery, high speed copying or bindery equipment.  Routine assignments are carried out independently, but more complex tasks may require the assistance of supervisory personnel.  Work is performed under the general supervision of assigned supervisory personnel, and is reviewed upon completion for quality of the finished copy.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Burns and develops offset plates;

            Installs sensitized plate, sets machine for size and thickness of paper, regulates ink flow and rate of feed and makes all necessary adjustments to achieve desired quality of work;

            Maintains and makes minor repairs on offset machinery and bindery equipment;

            Cleans and treats plates after use;

            Operates auxiliary machines such as collator, paper puncher, perforator, binder, stitcher, folder, cutter, wrapper, numberer and padder;

            Operates high speed copying equipment.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the operation, limitations and adaptabilities of offset duplicating equipment and machinery; good knowledge of paper stocks, inks, chemicals and related printing materials; good knowledge of machine adjustments required in the performance of offset duplicating work, high speed copying and bindery equipment; ability to perform skilled work in the preparation of metal plates; ability to maintain routine records and to submit simple reports; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a) One (1) year of experience in the operation of offset duplicating equipment, high-speed duplicator or bindery equipment; or,

            b) One (1) year of vocational training in offset printing at a recognized school.

 

NOTE High-speed duplicator equipment is defined as equipment capable of producing a minimum of 75 copies per minute.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Duplicating Machine Operator I.

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon the assignment, at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
