DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises, operates and maintains offset printing equipment.  The incumbent is responsible for the performance of technical work involving the preparation of printing plates and the production of a variety of printed documents.  The work is performed under the technical guidance and administrative supervision of the Print Shop Supervisor or other assigned supervisory personnel, and is reviewed through discussion and observation of completed assignments.  Supervision is exercised over a small staff of Duplicating Machine Operators.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Plans the layout and spacing, and schedules and participates in the production of forms, charts, letterheads, reports and other materials;

          Operates large printing equipment;

          Maintains an inventory of the various types of materials used in the department;

          Maintains required records as to the production of work for various departments;

          Makes minor repairs and adjustments to duplicating machines when necessary;

          May meet with department representatives to discuss printing requirements.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, limitations and adaptabilities of offset presses, duplicators, binders and related equipment; thorough knowledge of paper stocks, inks, chemicals and related printing materials; good knowledge of photo-offset plate-making, collating and stencilling; good knowledge of supervisory techniques; good knowledge of office procedures and practices; skill in operating offset and bindery machinery; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain routine records and to prepare reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Four (4) years of experience in the operation of offset duplicating equipment, high speed networked copying or bindery equipment, including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

 

NOTE:  One (1) year of vocational training in offset printing from a recognized school will be substituted for one (1) year of the above experience.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Duplicating Machine Operator III.
