DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in supervising the operations of a large print shop or supervises the operations of a smaller print shop.  The incumbent is a working supervisor engaged in planning and supervisory work for a print shop operation and in participation in the more responsible aspects of the work.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Print Shop Supervisor or an administrative supervisor.  Direct supervision is exercised over the work of the print shop staff.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Confers with other departments regarding work they have submitted for processing;

          Schedules or assists in scheduling assignments and supervising design of layouts;

          Supervises and participates in the operation of offset duplicating equipment used in producing a variety of forms, charts, letterheads, reports and other materials.

          May supervise or assist in supervising mail collection and distribution, operation of postal meters and interdepartmental messenger service.

         

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the operation, limitations and adaptabilities of offset presses and related equipment;  thorough knowledge of paper stocks, inks, chemicals and related printing materials; good knowledge of process cameras and platemaking; good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques; skill in operating offset machinery; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to maintain a variety of records and to prepare and submit reports; ability to maintain routine financial records; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in the operation of offset duplicating equipment, high speed networked copying or bindery equipment, including one (1) year in a supervisory capacity.

 

          NOTE: Additional education will be substituted for the non-supervisory experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Duplicating Machine Operator IV; or,

          One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Graphics Supervisor.
