DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class supervises School Crossing Guards in a precinct, or supervises and participates in the work of the Police Teletype Unit during shifts when an administrative supervisor is not on duty.  Duties in other units may require testimony at DWI judicial hearings.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises a staff engaged in coding, composing and transmitting messages and notifications over a computerized teletype network;

          Supervises a staff of School Crossings Guards in a precinct;

          Develops and implements work schedules;

          Maintains State mandated logs and records;

          Maintains employee time accrual records and related administrative functions as directed by supervisors;

          Approves messages prior to transmittal;

          Serves as a resource for unusual coding requirements and problem solving;

          Ensures operation of teletype system in accordance with federal, state and local laws;

          Prioritizes staff workload;

          Trains new employees;

          Logs and reports equipment malfunctions;

          Participates in sending and receiving teletype messages;

          Operates CJIS computerized arrest processing equipment to create criminal history files;

          Assembles documents for presentation at judicial hearings;

          Accesses NYS Department of Motor Vehicle database to obtain information associated with seized vehicles;

          May testify at judicial hearings about the authenticity of police and court records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of terminology, procedures and equipment used in police teletype work; skill in typing accurately at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to learn a coding system; ability to interpret departmental regulations in carrying out assignments; ability to establish good working relationships with police officers and representatives of other agencies; ability to plan, organize and direct the work of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of clerical experience, two (2) years of which are in a supervisory capacity.


NOTE: Additional education beyond high school from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for the above experience on a year-for-year basis.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

             Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Police Operations Aide, District Attorney Operations Aide, Senior Office Assistant, Senior Clerk, or Senior Stenographer.   

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Depending upon assignment, employees may be required to obtain New York State Police Information Network (NYSPIN) certification within (1) one month of appointment; employees must maintain this certification while employed in this title.

Depending on assignment, possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at time of appointment; if required, license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
