Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for
performing work in receiving, transmitting and monitoring communications from
and to vehicles and personnel within a local municipality. Communications are also received by
telephone from other employees and the public.
Responsibility is included for maintaining a daily log of all calls received
and transmitted. Routine clerical
duties may be performed in accordance with the needs of the Department being
served. Assignments are received from a
supervisor who reviews work methods and records for effectiveness and for
adherence to the regulations and procedures of the jurisdiction. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Conveys instructions
and work orders to field or office personnel and receives and transmits
messages between various field crews;
Receives telephone
calls from Senior Citizens requesting bus transportation and transmits messages
to drivers in the program;
Receives inquiries and
complaints from taxpayers and other municipal employees and routes them
correctly;
Receives telephone
calls from the public to a local animal shelter and transmits messages to Dog
Control Officers in the field;
Maintains daily
records of all transmissions;
May maintain a daily
weather log;
May activate a system
of fire or emergency alarms within the jurisdiction.

Ability to learn the regulations and procedures of the jurisdiction;
ability to learn the geography of the jurisdiction; ability to learn the
practices and procedures of using a two-way radio system; ability to react quickly and calmly in
emergencies; ability to maintain a variety of routine records; ability to
transmit messages with good diction and a clear speaking voice; physical
condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
