DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class is responsible for the supervision and training of Fire House Attendants who receive and transmit emergency service calls on two-way radios or other communication systems in a fire district facility.  The incumbent assigns work schedules, prepares reports on the activities of the unit, and monitors custodial and maintenance activities as directed by the Board of Fire Commissioners or its designee.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises the work of Fire House Attendants in the performance of their duties operating two-way radios or other communication systems for a fire district;

          Trains and evaluates the performance of Fire House Attendants in the proper conduct of their duties;

          Assigns work schedules and determines staffing requirements to provide adequate coverage in a fire district by Fire House Attendants;

          Maintains attendance, vacation, sick, and other personnel records for subordinate fire district employees;

          Prepares periodic statistical reports on the nature and disposition of communications received;

          May be asked to drive district vehicles for servicing and maintenance.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the procedures used in receiving and dispatching calls for emergency assistance; thorough knowledge of the geographic layout and road network of the fire district; thorough knowledge of emergency fire and rescue terminology; good knowledge of two-way radios and other emergency commu­nications equipment; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinate personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to remain calm when eliciting information from persons who may be in a highly emotional state; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in dispatching public safety vehicles.

NOTE:  Experience in dispatching emergency vehicles may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Fire House Attendant.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

          1. Candidate must be free of any speech or hearing defect which would impair their functioning in this position.

          2. Candidates may be required to possess the appropriate New York State driver’s license, and maintain such license throughout employment in this position.
