DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general direction, an employee in this class is responsible for the maintenance of the computer systems found in the Fire District’s facilities and for the supervision of the dispatch staff.  The incumbent assigns work schedules, prepares reports on the activities of the unit, and monitors the performance of the Fire House Attendants.  Responsibility is included for maintaining the accuracy of the computer databases and for identifying and correcting problems with the computer systems.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

                 Diagnoses computer and network problems;

            Solves problems relating to hardware and refers software problems to appropriate vendors as necessary;

            Maintains the accuracy of various computer databases regarding Fire/EMS incidents for the fire district;

            Assists the departmental personnel in learning the use of automated office systems equipment,

            Assists in researching and implementing new technologies;

            Supervises the work of Fire House Attendants in the performance of their duties operating two-way radios or other communication systems for a fire district;

            Trains and evaluates the performance of Fire House Attendants in the proper conduct of their duties;

            Assigns work schedules and determines staffing requirements to provide adequate coverage in a fire district by Fire House Attendants;

            Prepares periodic statistical reports on the nature and disposition of communications received;

            May fill in to operate the two-way radio systems or other communications systems for a fire district.

                       

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the procedures used in receiving and dispatching calls for emergency assistance; thorough knowledge of the geographic layout and road network of the fire district; thorough knowledge of emergency fire and rescue terminology; thorough knowledge of current automated Emergency Services Dispatch equipment; ability to diagnose automated equipment problems and assist in their resolution; ability to supervise dispatch staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to instruct personnel in equipment use; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in the dispatching of public safety vehicles, two (2) years of which has included or is supplemented by experience working with automated emergency services dispatch systems, at least one (1) year of which must include system installation, configuration, evaluation and troubleshooting. 

 

NOTE: Additional education in Firematic Information Systems or in a computer-related field from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university may be substituted for the two (2) years of experience working with automated emergency services dispatch systems.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

            Candidate must be free of any speech or hearing defects which would impair functioning in this position.

            There may be special requirements unique to individual fire districts.
