DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class operates a scale to weigh vehicles at a public facility, such as highway yard, incinerator plant or refuse disposal site.  The incumbent computes the weight of the contents to verify the amount of deliveries, to record the amount of materials being issued or to determine the charge for dumping refuse.  Work may also involve responsibility for collecting fees, maintaining records of receipts and preparing bank deposits.  Supervision is received from a supervisor responsible for the operation of the facility.  Performance is reviewed through observation of work performed, consultation and review of records maintained.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Operates a computerized scale to weigh vehicles at a municipal highway yard;

          Verifies weight of materials delivered to the yard;

          Notifies the suppliers when deliveries are short;

          Records the weight of materials issued from the yard for inventory control and charge-back purposes;

Weighs trucks dumping refuse at a public incinerator, landfill or other refuse disposal site; Determines the amount of fees;

Collects cash and checks and issues receipts;

          Maintains records of vehicles using a refuse disposal site, tonage of refuse dumped and fees received;

          Balances out cash register at the end of shift;

          Prepares and makes bank deposits of receipts;

          Provides information and directions to the individuals making use of public utilities;

          May answer telephone; responds to inquiries from facility users.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Knowledge of basic arithmetic as it relates to the calculation of weights and fees; skill in the operation of cash registers and scales used in the weighing of vehicles; ability to make rapid and accurate arithmetic computations; ability to maintain a variety of routine clerical records; ability to receive cash and make change with accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
