DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for auditing the business activities of a School District per powers vested under the Section of the Education Law of New York State appropriate to that district.  In the performance of duties, the Auditor may supervise and monitor a subordinate staff in their adherence to law and School Board policy.  The incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment and initiative.  Supervision is given by the chief school administrator and the School Board through conferences and reports.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Determines that purchase orders have been issued in accordance with School Board policy and law;

            Compares invoices with previously approved contracts;

            Audits and reports all claims made to the School District to the chief school administrator and the School Board;

            Provides the School District Treasurer with evidence that claims have been audited and are eligible for payment;

            Informs and recommends to the chief school administrator and School Board the financial condition and future needs of the School District;

            Verifies the accuracy of employees' sick leave and payroll deductions;

            Establishes and maintains internal controls and auditing systems.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations of New York State relating to School Districts and auditing; thorough knowledge of auditing and accounting systems, investiture of funds, budgeting, and controls of same; good ability to analyze data and make valuable judgments; ability to understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with school officials, School Board members, employees, and the general public; ability to supervise a subordinate staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
