DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class performs specialized manual work in the moving, storage and handling of bulk materiel.  Work is performed under the supervision of a Materiel Control Clerk IV or other designated superi­or.  The employee performs a range of warehousing functions such as filling requisitions, assisting in inventories, checking goods for damage, and maintain­ing a clean and safe storage area.  The incumbent may organize the job and direct Laborers and other warehouse staff when performing specialized tasks.  Assignments are received in the form of requisitions to be filled and bulk items to be received, stored or delivered.  Performance is reviewed by the supervisor for the condition of stored goods and effectiveness in performing duties.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Moves and stores bulk materiel using appropriate devices such as block and tackle, ramps, fork lifts and hydraulic jacks; 

          Issues supplies on approved requisitions; 

          Assists in conducting inventory of stored materiel; 

          Receives stores at warehouse and checks for damage;  

          Operates trucks with hydraulic tailgate lift and delivers bulk goods to consumer; 

          Plans and allocates space in warehouse for most efficient and safe storage of materiel. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the operation and use of fork lifts and other load carrying equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in handling bulk goods and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of equipment; skill in moving, loading and storing bulk goods, furniture and/or hazardous materiel; ability to carry out oral and written instructions; ability to adapt equipment and vehicles to the needs of a particular job; ability to make routine arithmetic calculations; physical strength commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience in the handling of bulk materiel, in the use of fork lifts and other bulk loading devices. 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of an appropriate license issued by the New York State Depart­ment of Motor Vehicles for the type vehicle to be operated; employee must maintain the license while employed in this title.
