DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs specialized manual and supervisory work in the moving, storage and handling of bulk materiel.  The employee supervises a range of warehousing functions such as filling requisitions, performing physical inventories, checking goods for damage, and maintaining a clean and safe storage area.  The incumbent supervises the organization of the job and directs warehouse staff when performing specialized tasks.  Performance is reviewed for the condition of stored goods and effectiveness in performing duties.  Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Supervises the movement and storage of bulk materiel by appropriate devices such as block and tackle, ramps, fork lifts and hydraulic jacks;

            Approves requisitions for issuance of supplies;

            Supervises physical inventory of stored material;

            Supervises planning and allocation of space in warehouse for most efficient and safe storage of material;

            May operate or supervise the operation of trucks with hydraulic tailgate lift and delivery of bulk goods to consumer.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of the interrelated procedures of store-keeping and warehouse work; good knowledge of occupational hazards involved in the handling of bulk goods and operation of equipment; good knowledge of arithmetic to make necessary calculations; ability to supervise employees in the operation of fork lifts and other load-carrying equipment; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral and schedule form; ability to supervise the work of personnel in a tactful and effective manner; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            Either:

            (a)  Three (3) years of experience in the handling of bulk material, in the use of fork lifts and other bulk loading devices; or,

            (b)  One (1) year of permanent status as a Warehouse Worker II.

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of an appropriate license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the type vehicle to be operated; employee must maintain the license while employed in this title.
