DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
organizes, manages and operates storage facilities for automotive parts,
equipment and tools. Responsibility is
included for overseeing and maintaining inventory records, and supervision is
exercised over Automotive Parts Clerks and assistant employees. Duties require
heavy lifting and use of devices such as fork lifts, skid jacks and
dollies. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Establishes
procedures for and participates in the issuance of automotive parts, tools and
equipment;
Oversees
and maintains inventory records of automotive parts, entering such variables as
item, quantity received, quantity dispensed, vendor, purchase order number, and
cost;
Maintains
records of all parts numbers and prices;
Inspects
received items to assure conformance with purchase orders and specifications;
Monitors
periodic inventories of stored items, compiles reports of stock on hand and
patterns of stock flow;
Assists
in the budget preparation for the automotive parts storage facility;
Purchases
automotive parts by telephone or written orders, referring to parts catalogs as
necessary and applying applicable discounts;
May pick
up and deliver automotive parts.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of storekeeping methods, procedures
and organization; thorough knowledge of automotive parts, supplies, tools and
equipment; knowledge of purchasing procedures; knowledge of arithmetic; ability
to plan, organize and direct the work of employees in a manner conducive to
full performance and high morale; ability to identify automotive parts and use
parts catalogs; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to lift heavy
items and use lifting devices; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and four (4) years of experience in automotive parts storekeeping.
NOTE: One (1) year of experience in automotive repair or
successful completion of either a high school or post high school certificate
course in auto mechanics
will be substituted for one (1) year of the above
experience.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2)
years of permanent competitive status as an Automotive Parts Clerk.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. The ability to lift and stack items weighing
50 pounds.
2. At the time of appointment and during
employment in this title, candidates will be required to possess a valid
license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
