DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class is
responsible for the vehicle intake process of the County operated service center. A major function of the position is the
writing of work orders. The employee must be able to interpret operator
complaints, diagnose the problem and describe the preliminary diagnosis on the
work order. Work is performed under the
general supervision of an Automotive Mechanic V and the employee works in
conjunction with an Automotive Mechanic IV to set up schedules for the
completion of work orders. The employee
is also responsible for reviewing work orders for completeness, maintaining
automated records of all work orders, and arranging for vehicles to be picked
up after completion. Performs related
duties as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Receives vehicles for repair, writes
work orders which includes making and describing a preliminary diagnosis of the
problem based on operator complaints;
Coordinates
and assists in setting up a work schedule for the completion of work orders;
sets up schedules for the completion of N.Y.S. vehicle inspections;
Checks
work order for completeness; enters pertinent information on computerized base
management system;
Schedules
appointments for repair of vehicles which are under vendor contracts; contacts
vendors to arrange for pick-up, repair and return of vehicles;
Contacts
vehicle operators after vehicle repair is completed to arrange for pick-up of
the vehicle;
Checks
computer system to determine if any vehicles have not complied with preventive
maintenance schedules; schedules appointments with operators of any vehicles
which have not complied.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS,
ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods,
materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade; good
knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of
automotive equipment; good knowledge of the mechanisms, systems and components
of gasoline and diesel-fueled vehicles; skill in diagnosing causes of vehicle
malfunctions based upon operator complaints; ability to prepare written work
orders including descriptions of problem diagnoses; ability to update and
maintain an automated data base system; ability to develop and maintain
effective working relationships; ability to set up schedules for the completion
of work orders; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the
position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(a)
Completion of two (2) years of vocational education courses in either a
vocational school program or in an apprentice or training program in automotive
mechanics and one (1) year of work experience in the repair and rebuilding of
mechanical systems and components of automotive equipment and/or in writing
repair orders in an automotive repair shop; or,
(b) Three (3) years of experience in
the repair and rebuilding of mechanical systems and components of automotive
equipment and/or in writing repair orders in an automotive repair shop; or,
(c)
An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits
of (a) and (b).
