DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves interviewing, counseling and referring applicants for job openings in Suffolk County. Under supervision, an employee in this class works to establish and procure job openings for qualified applicants.  The incumbent works with considerable independence both with employers and applicants and may supervise a small clerical staff.  Work is reviewed by a division administrator through staff and personal conferences and review of written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Screens applications in order to secure information regarding education, experience, special training and other related features;

            Visits business and industrial establishments to solicit job orders and inform businessmen about employment service facilities;

            Secures labor market and occupational data for local and statewide use;

            Counsels and assists various youth groups in analyzing and evaluating their aptitudes, experience, and training in terms of available job openings;

            May counsel applicants and enrollees of various youth groups on personal habits and work etiquette;

            Cooperates with other public and private agencies concerned with employment programs.          

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of counseling principles, practices and techniques as well as their application to employment problems; good knowledge of employment research techniques; good knowledge of community vocational training agencies and employment placement sources; good knowledge of current literature and sources of information pertaining to the field of employment; ability to analyze employment progress and to exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions and making recommendations; ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, employers, agency representatives and other interested persons and to obtain and evaluate information gathered through interviews and investigations; ability to publicize and promote the employment services offered by the department; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.          

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree and five (5) years of responsible experience in professional personnel administration.
