DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class assists clients in evaluating educational and vocational objectives.  The employee helps clients to understand their interests, talents and personality characteristics, and gathers educational, occupational, and economic information to instruct them.  The work is reviewed by technical or administrative supervisors through conferences, reports and the attainment of desired objectives.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists clients in determining their career options;

          Researches, plans and writes reports on pertinent career issues;

          Reviews and interprets college, technical school internship, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training programs;

          Designs and conducts career workshops;

          Analyzes and explains current job markets, job trends, and salary ranges;

          Administers and evaluates personality and career assessment tests and relates personality and interest to occupations to determine interest patterns;

          Assists clients with resume and cover letter preparation;

          Instructs clients in interviewing procedures in the form of role playing;

          Provides financial aid information.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of current career information resources such as books and films; thorough knowledge of current college and technical programs available; thorough knowledge of employment research techniques; good knowledge of community vocational training agencies and employment placement sources; good knowledge of counseling principles and techniques and their application to employment problems; ability to establish effective working relationships with clients, employers, agency representatives and other interested individuals to obtain and evaluate information; ability to design and implement diverse career information projects and programs; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree and three years of experience in career counseling, guidance counseling, personnel administration, or in planning, direct­ing or publicizing a vocational training program.

 

NOTE:  Additional education in counseling or psychology beyond the Bachelor's degree may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
