FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under the general direction of the County Personnel
Officer, an employee in this class is responsible for leading the development,
implementation and oversight of Suffolk County’s diversity and inclusion
initiatives. The employee will perform professional level duties designed to
improve diversity and inclusion in County hiring and personnel practices and
will identify, evaluate, and make recommendations to improve diversity
throughout the County. Work is performed according to general policies
established by the County. The nature of the work is such that the employee is
required to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the
performance of assigned objectives. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL
WORK ACTIVITIES
Develops, implements, and
oversees the County’s diversity and inclusion policies and goals;
Conducts research concerning
diverse populations and develops targeted approaches for meeting diversity
needs in the Civil Service hiring process;
Fosters governmental ties with
the local community to enhance diversity efforts;
Develops and/or searches out the
best available training opportunities for County Department Heads, management,
and staff;
Develops and maintains a system
for reporting on the progress of the County’s diversity and inclusion
initiatives;
Conducts and attends
conferences, workshops, and seminars concerned with issues of the diverse
workforce;
Provides referral services for
the diverse population seeking employment with Suffolk County;
Participates in community,
regional and statewide equity collaborations;
Conducts various community
presentations throughout Suffolk County;
Assists in County recruitment
practices and outreach;
May organize community groups
for Civil Service instruction.

PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough
knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of administering
diversity and inclusion programs and practices in the public sector; working
knowledge of the legal, administrative, and procedural regulations applicable
to the administration and operation of a diversity and inclusion program in the
public sector; ability to analyze data and direct the performance of
assessments related to diversity and inclusion; ability to work collaboratively
with a diverse set of stakeholders and colleagues and develop common goals;
ability to coach, mentor, and motivate colleagues and staff; ability to develop
and maintain effective working relationships with officials at all levels;
ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing;
good judgment; tact; courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands
of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN-COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or
registration by New York State with a Master’s Degree in sociology, psychology,
education, public administration, management, ethnic studies, communication or
a closely related field, and (2) years of progressively responsible
administrative and management experience; or,
b) Graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or
registration by New York State with a Bachelor’s Degree in sociology,
psychology, education, public administration, management, ethnic studies,
communication or a closely related field, and (4) years of progressively
responsible administrative and management experience; or,
c) Graduation from a college with federally authorized accreditation or
registration by New York State with an Associate’s Degree in sociology, psychology,
education, public administration, management, ethnic studies, communication or
a closely related field, and (6) six years of progressively responsible
administrative and management experience; or,
d) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by
the limits of a), b), or c).
