DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists subscribers to a small computer system in utilizing information on the use of the system.  The incumbent monitors computer equipment to isolate possible mechanical causes of difficulties.  Work is performed under the supervision of an administrative supervisor who makes assignments and reviews work by observation and consultation.  Does related work as requested.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Monitors computer equipment to isolate possible mechanical causes of difficulties encountered by system users;

          Provides elementary operating instructions to users not familiar with the system;

          Reviews user input and output to assist in correct terminal operation and to prevent improper or unscheduled use of the system;

          Restarts the computer after simple halts according to established proce­dures;

          Runs diagnostic programs to ensure that the system is functioning correct­ly;

          Maintains a library of computer programs and resource material;

     Recommends purchase of new computer equipment and supplies;

          May give demonstrations in the proper methods of achieving access to the computer.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Some knowledge of the principles and procedures of electronic data proces­sing operations; skill in the operation and use of small scale electronic data processing equipment; ability to isolate malfunctions in the operation of computer equipment and to make minor adjustments to the machines; ability to express oneself orally in a clear and concise manner; ability to follow oral and written instructions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and one (1) year of technical computer experience which includes monitoring, maintaining or repairing computer systems and/or expe­rience in the modification of such systems.

 

          NOTE:  Additional education in a related field including Computer Science or instruction in the maintenance, repair or modification of computer systems attained at an accredited college or university  or from a non-degree-granting computer training institution will be substituted for up to six

(6) months of experience.
