DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in the class assists in the instal­lation, maintenance and upgrading of computer software and hardware systems in main frame and microcomputer environments. The incumbent assists in developing instructional programs in hardware and software use, and in the maintenance of system problems, call logs and a technical library.  Supervision is received from a departmental supervisor through conferences and oral and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Assists in the maintenance of a call log in regard to software and hardware questions and problems for both the main frame on-line applications and personal computers. This includes, but is not limited to, questions about documentation both in-house and vendor packages, user errors, hardware problems;

          Assists in the testing, delivery and setup of new equipment in user department/divisions;

          Installs and upgrades software including the ability to customize same to meet specific requirements.  Installs and tests new adapters and boards in equipment;

          Assists in the solution of problems relating to hardware and software;

          Helps maintain a log of service calls to manufacturer.  Assists in the delivery and pickup of equipment from manufacturer;

          Assists in preparation of materials for classes on the use and care of equipment and guidelines for using software.  Assists in the instruction of classes and demonstrations;

          Assists in the maintenance of the technical library of reference books, manufacturers' hardware and software manuals, vendor product announcements and guides, periodicals and learning publications.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of electronic data processing systems and principles; good knowledge of system analysis as it applies to electronic data processing; working knowledge of electronic data processing hardware and software including capabilities and comparabilities; working knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in maintaining a manufacturer's operating system; ability to modify existing computer software to accomplish specific tasks and attain specific objectives; ability to modify computer hardware to accomplish specific tasks and attain specific objectives; ability to organize and plan educational presentations on the use of EDP hard and software; ability to organize and maintain files, records, and educational and resource material in a reference library; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          a)  Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and one (1) year of experience either in main frame operations or programming, or in the installation, maintenance or modification of hardware and software of personal computers or mini computer systems; or,

          b)  Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree and three (3) years of experience as described above.

         

          NOTE:  For (b), college-level coursework in computer science or data processing may be substituted for experience up to a maximum of two (2) years, at the rate of fifteen (15) credits = one (1) year.
