DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class installs, maintains and upgrades electronic data processing hardware and software systems in main frame and microcomputer environments. The incumbent develops and presents instructional programs in hardware and software use and maintains a system problem call log and a technical library.  Supervision is received from a departmental supervisor through conferences and oral and written assignments. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Maintains logs of calls in regard to software and hardware questions and problems for both the main frame on-line applications and personal computers.  Is responsible for testing, delivery and setup of new equipment in user department/divisions;

            Installs and upgrades software on user equipment including the customizing of the software to meet the users individual requirements.  Assists in the modification of equipment including installation and testing of new adapters and boards;

            Aids in the resolution of all questions and problems, including the trou­bleshooting of problems (running of specialized diagnostic software and the testing of equipment);

            Maintains a log and places service calls to manufacturer. Ships, delivers and picks up equipment from manufacturer;

            Evaluates user needs and researches hardware and/or software products available to fulfill same.  Recommends standards for software (including release levels), learning tools and peripheral devices in order to maintain a reasonable level with industry standards;

            Prepares materials to give classes on the use and care of equipment and guidelines for using software.  Instructs classes and gives demonstrations;

            Maintains technical library of reference books, manufacturers hardware and software manuals, vendor product announcements and guides, periodicals and learning publications. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of electronic data processing systems and principles; thorough knowledge of system analysis as it applies to electronic data process­ing; good knowledge of electronic data processing hardware and software, includ­ing capabilities and compatibilities; good knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in maintaining a manufacturer's operating system; ability to modify existing computer software to accomplish specific tasks and attain specific objectives; ability to modify computer hardware to accomplish specific tasks and attain specific objectives; ability to organize, plan and present instructional material on EDP hardware and software; ability to organize and maintain files records, educational and resource material in a reference library; judgment; tact; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

            a)  Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science and one (1) year of experience either in main frame operations or programming, or in the installation, maintenance or modification of hardware and software of personal computers or mini computer systems; or,

 

            b) Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Data Processing or Computer Science and three (3) years of experience as described above.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Technical Coordinator I.
