DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under immediate supervision, an employee in this class
will be trained on the job in the proper operation of all computer hardware
used in the data processing center. The
employee's training is provided by higher level data processing personnel who
assign progressively more responsible work in accordance with the trainee's
experience and level of the technical proficiency. Work is closely supervised by higher-level
computer operators and is reviewed through frequent consultation and inspection
of the quality and speed of work produced.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Follows
instructions provided by experienced data processing personnel in running programs
through the computer in accordance with standard techniques and procedures;
Operates
peripheral computer components such as tape and disk drives, card readers and
printers;
Learns
to follow flow charts and instruction sheets prepared by computer programmers
and analysts for running programs;
Assists
in monitoring the computer console; learns the various commands used in
communicating with the computer; responds to console messages; and keys in
appropriate instructions;
Assists
in the maintenance of operating records, such as run logs, production reports
and machine performance reports.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Ability to learn to operate electronic computer equipment
of considerable complexity, including the central control console, tape and
disk drives, printers, card readers, on-line terminals and other peripheral
equipment; ability to learn to understand and follow computer programs,
operating instructions and flow charts prepared by programmer and analyst;
ability to learn to understand, interpret and follow coded console messages to
determine computer status and to process computer programs to completion;
ability to follow oral and written instructions and procedures to execute
various stages of the operations of a program; ability to maintain routine
records on the operations of the computer; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN
COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency,
and either: a) one (1) year of
experience in the operation of medium or large scale computer system; or,
b) completion of an occupational
training program in computer operations.
NOTE: Computer
operation involves technical work in the running of a computer system including
a central processor and peripheral equipment.
