DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class is responsible for supervising a computer room shift and for overseeing console operation.  The incumbent works with considerable technical independence in supervising and participating in the operation of the computer, the instruction and training of lower level Computer Operators and the planning of the daily workload.  Work is reviewed by higher level data processing personnel for conformance with established procedures, effec­tiveness in meeting production requirements and accuracy of the work produced.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Supervises Computer Operator Is and Computer Operator IIs in the operation of a central computer, related on-site peripheral devices and on-line input-output terminals;

          Oversees and participates in the operation of the central console; monitors the status of jobs in the computer through the console; changes job priority as required;

          Reviews program operation sheets and diagrams to determine proper organiza­tion of work for the computer; assigns jobs to be run to Computer Operators;

          Consults with lower level Computer Operators on the cause of equipment or system malfunction; confers with technical and equipment service personnel in the identification and correction of hardware and software problems;

          Supervises Computer Operator Is and Computer Operator IIs in restarting the system follow­ing a halt, restoring data to on-line systems from back-up tapes, and bringing up on-line terminals which have shut down;

          Trains and instructs Computer Operators in the operation of the system and procedures of the unit;

          Maintains operating records, such as run logs and machine performance and production reports;

          Runs test programs; advises supervisors of any procedural problems with the programs as well as processing time and requirements.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, procedures and techniques of elec­tronic computer operations; thorough knowledge of the procedures to be used in operating computer equipment, including the central control console, magnetic tape and drives, and disk packs, card readers, printers and related peripheral equipment; knowledge of the capabilities and application of computer hardware and software as related to the operations phase of data processing; ability to follow computer programs through the various phases of operation to final conclusion; ability to isolate malfunctions in the operation of computer equipment, to follow procedures in correcting existing problems and to confer with service personnel on unresolved equipment failures; ability to supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to compile and prepare records and reports on computer operations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience in electronic computer operations which included the operation of a processor that exercises control over a network of communications terminals, disk and tape drives, high speed printers and has a minimum of 1.5 million bytes of main memory.

 

          NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis.

          Completion of a course in computer operations which has included at least 300 hours of instruction will be substituted for six (6) months of the above experience.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Computer Operator II.
