DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs responsible work in the scheduling of the work of a computer operations unit, the direct supervision of Computer Operators and the review of operations procedures.  The incumbent acts as an assistant to the operations supervisor or assumes responsi­bility for the operations unit on a particular shift.  This position differs from positions in the title of Computer Operator III in the extent of supervi­sion exercised, the degree of independent judgment required in the scheduling and coordinating of the work and the responsibility for interaction with other units.  Performance is evaluated by an operations supervisor or other adminis­trative supervisor through consultation, conferences, review of oral and written reports and the examination of production statistics.  Does related work as re­quired.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

          Schedules the work of a computer operations shift on the basis of job priority and hardware and software capabilities;

          Assigns and supervises the work of Computer Operators in the operation of the system;

          Monitors the central computer console periodically to check on the status of work in process and to ensure that remote site on-line terminals are func­tioning correctly;

          Assists the operations supervisor or other data processing supervisor in the review of new systems and applications in the terms of their impact on opera­tions procedures, scheduling and equipment utilization;

          Recommends procedural changes in computer programs and operation instruc­tions to increase efficiency of processing time and machine utilization;

          Instructs and trains Computer Operators in the operation of the system;

          Confers with the operations coordinator and other supervisors on the equipment needs of the unit.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, procedures and techniques of electronic computer operations; comprehensive knowledge of the procedures used in operating computer equipment, including the central control console, tape and disk drives, card readers, printers and related peripheral equipment; good knowledge of the capabilities and application of computer software and hardware as related to the operations phase of data processing; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to evaluate the impact of new systems and programs on the work of the operations unit; ability to schedule the work of a computer operations unit to achieve maximum efficiency in job processing and equipment utilization; ability to follow computer programs through the various phases of operation to final conclusion; ability to compile and prepare records and reports on the operation; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of experience in electronic computer operations which included the operation of a processor that exercises control over a network of communications terminals, disk and tape drives, high speed printers and has a minimum of 1.5 million bytes of main memory.

 

          NOTE:  Additional experience will be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis. Completion of a course in computer operations which has included at least 300 hours of instruction will be substituted for six (6) months of the above experience.

 

          PROMOTIONAL

          One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Computer Operator III.
