DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
plans, coordinates and supervises the equipment sections of a municipal data processing
department or unit. The employee uses
independent judgment to schedule operations and to assign and train personnel
who translate the technical work of programming and systems analysis into a
timely final product. Supervision is
exercised over a substantial number of equipment operators. Work is reviewed
periodically by a data processing manager or administrator through reports and
upon completion to insure conformance with instructions and established
procedures. Does related work as
required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Schedules
the efficient use of all equipment in the computer operations section;
Assigns
work to personnel and instructs them when necessary to perform assigned duties
in accordance with established methods and procedures;
Reviews
equipment logs for accuracy, neatness and efficient use of equipment;
Coordinates
activities with other section supervisors;
Confers
with programmers or analysts about procedures, machine time, rates of output,
and difficulties encountered;
Recommends
modifications to improve the efficiency of data processing operations.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, care and
adjustment of electronic computers and peripheral equipment such as disk
drives, keypunch machines, printer, etc.; thorough knowledge of the
application of major types of computing equipment to business problems; skill
in the operation of electronic data processing equipment; ability to plan and
supervise the work of a technical staff in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to draw comprehensive diagrams and write
reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation
from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and seven (7) years of experience in the operation of electronic data
processing equipment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory
capacity.
