DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class edits, corrects  and balances data input for computer processing.  The incumbent prepares work schedules and ensures timely completion of assignments, assembles daily input, prepares runs, submits jobs for processing and reviews output for accuracy. The incumbent exercises independent judgement and initiative in the performance of highly complex and responsible data processing functions.  The employee acts as a lead worker or supervises a staff engaged in data processing activities.  Work is reviewed by an administrative or technical supervisor through conferences, periodic reports and effectiveness of the operation.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

     Enters data on a computer system for the user-districts;

     Assembles daily input (scans), makes corrections, records tape numbers  in logs and lists inputs; prepares runs; selects data decks and punch control cards; submits job for processing; reviews output for accuracy;

     Prepares a monthly computer processing schedule;

     Interviews, schedules, assigns and supervises the work of per diem employees;

     Participates in systems tests and parallel runs to insure the correct and efficient operation of systems.

     Assists Data Processing Clerks and other clerical personnel in completion of tasks to ensure timely completion of tasks;

     May assist with the identification and correction of problems with files  or data bases and in establishing retention schedules and backup procedures.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the methods and equipment used in the process of data

entry; good knowledge of general office practices and procedures; good knowledge 

of data processing terminology and equipment; some knowledge of bookkeeping methods and principles; ability to plan, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to verify accuracy of data; ability to maintain personnel, production and control records; ability to  maintain effective relationships with user dis­tricts; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

          OPEN COMPETITIVE

          Either:

          (a)  Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with an Associ­ate's Degree in Computer Science and one (1) year of experience in the field of electronic data processing, including the operation of CRT terminals, computers or peripheral equipment; or,

         

          (b)  Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as defined in (a).

 

PROMOTIONAL

One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Data Processing Clerk,  Senior Clerk, Senior Clerk Typist, or Account Clerk Typist working in the  field of electronic data processing in a data processing division, including the operation of CRT terminals, computers or peripheral equipment.
