DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee
in this class is responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operation of a
smaller data processing center or oversees several sections in a large data
processing center with an emphasis on quality control. The incumbent supervises all data control
functions and serves as liaison to end users, reviewing and developing
applications and troubleshooting problem areas.
Responsibility is
included for establishing and administering a data processing unit to enhance
efficiency. The work requires
considerable use of independent initiative and judgment. Supervision may be exercised over a support
staff of technical and clerical personnel.
Performance is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through
conferences, reports and quality control and production records. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Performs data control functions in all
assigned areas; e.g., grade reporting, attendance, accounting, test scoring,
payroll;
Receives
and acts on all user reported data processing problems;
Functions
as a service coordinator, receiving and handling user-reported data processing
problems;
Develops
procedures to evaluate effectiveness of support services provided to clients;
Makes
recommendations to administrators for improving data processing services;
assists them in upgrading hardware and software;
Supervises and evaluates multiple teams
of employees, facilitates teamwork, and staff training;
Implements
new data systems, requiring liaison with districts, administrators, and support
staff;
Ensures
that all work is stored on backup tapes;
Coordinates state reporting;
Prepares
production and related reports as requested by administrative personnel.

processing systems; thorough knowledge
of data control principles, practices and techniques; thorough knowledge of general office
procedures and practices; ability to

express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; tact; good
judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State with a Bachelor's Degree, and five (5) years of experience in the
supervision of a data control unit of a large data processing operation.
NOTE: Additional relevant experience may be
substituted for education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four (4)
years.
PROMOTIONAL
Two (2) years of permanent competitive
status as a Data Control Specialist or Principal
Office Applications Specialist.
