DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class assists in the performance of economic analyses of general and specific factors that affect the operations of Suffolk County government. Work is assigned and reviewed by a higher level Economist or an administrative supervisor. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in conducting economic studies that focus on factors that relate to the Suffolk County operating and capital budgets, programs in which the County may be involved, and/or policy issues that the County may want to address;

            Assists in compiling and analyzing data related to County expenditures and revenues, including but not limited to debt service, sales tax and property tax; 

            Assists in compiling and analyzing data related to tracking the economy;

            Assists in conducting extensive economic analyses for special research projects; 

            Assists with drafting resolutions and local laws; 

            Attends committee and legislative meetings. 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative analysis; ability to develop a working knowledge of current literature and data sources with regard to economic analysis; ability to analyze technical and factual data; ability to gain initiative in developing research methods and selecting data sources; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to an audience that may not have a background in economics;  must be able to work as part of team and be able to respond to deadlines and competing priorities; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Either:

 

a)      Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Economics; or,

 

b)      Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics or Business Administration, and two (2) years of experience in economic research and/or financial analysis; or,

 

c)      An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
