DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for the application of statistical theory and methods to plan statistical surveys, evaluate collected data and prepare analytical reports.  Assignments are received in the form of problems to be studied or solved and the incumbent is expected to exercise independent initiative and judgment in the preparation of sampling techniques and methods of data presentation.  Work is reviewed by an administrative supervisor through conferences and periodic review of work in progress.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Plans surveys to statistically analyze data on the basis of random sampling techniques, or on a complete enumeration;

            Develops questionnaires to conform with a survey's design;

            Selects data resources and determines the type and size of the group to be sampled;

            Evaluates the reliability of the sources of data, and then applies statistical theory and analysis to interpret or infer data in the form of tables, charts and graphs;

            Writes reports describing sources of data, and limitations on the reliability or usefulness by management and others;

            May analyze and interpret data to point out significant differences and relationships among sources, preparing conclusions and forecasts based on data summaries.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of statistical research and reporting; good knowledge of the various forms of questionnaires, the particular uses of each and their development; good knowledge of mathematical formulas used in statistical analysis, their applications and significance; knowledge of the recent development, literature and sources of information in the field of statistics; ability to evaluate the reliability and relevance of survey findings, and to avoid the inclusion of extraneous material; ability to make arithmetic and statistical computations rapidly and accurately; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree, and three (3) years of experience in the field of statistical analysis.

 

NOTE:  Relevant additional education at the graduate level will be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
