DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class plans and conducts biostatistical studies and surveys. The incumbent supervises the collection of statistical data for the purpose of formulating and completing health related statistical reports. This position differs from Statistician in that the Biostatistician works with data that relates primarily to epidemiology, vital rates, communicable diseases, and other health related areas. The incumbent is expected to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Under the direct supervision of an administrative supervisor, the work is reviewed via conferences and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Designs and participates in the collection of statistical data for research studies;

            Develops statistical measures for monitoring procedures of Health Service Agencies;

            Analyzes and interprets data to identify emerging health problems and changes in the health status of the county's population;

            Analyzes and interprets data for possible forecasts of potential incidence of disease;

            Selects data resources and determines the type and size of the group to be samples;

            Assists department officials and administrators in the interpretation of health data and the formulation of appropriate programmatic responses.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of statistical research and reporting; thorough knowledge of biostatistics, epidemiology, and health related fields; good knowledge of computer packages for biomedical and social sciences; good knowledge of present developments within the field; ability to use statistical software; ability to evaluate and interpret biostatistical data into relevant findings; ability to make arithmetic and statistical computations with accuracy; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or Regionally accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Biostatistics; or, a Master's Degree in Public Health including nine (9) graduate credits in statistics and at least three (3) graduate credits in epidemiology.
