Under general supervision, an employee in this class
researches medical literature, and assists in preparing statistical reports.
The incumbent gathers, organizes and tabulates data to identify and report
various types of rates and trends for the Health Department's various
divisions. This work requires the exercise of some initiative and independent
judgment in locating and utilizing resource materials, but is limited in
technical independence. Work is reviewed by, and supervision is received
through, frequent conferences with an administrative supervisor. Does related
work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Researches medical journals, extracts data and prepares
abstracts of articles;
writes reports on
findings;
Gathers, organizes and tabulates
data on suicides, homicides, accidental deaths and other cases;
Attends conferences and medical and
scientific meetings, and reports proceedings to administrators;
Assists scientific staff in locating
research material pertinent to their needs;
Contacts other scientific agencies
to obtain medical and statistical information.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of biostatistical concepts and methods; working knowledge of public health problems and programs; familiarity with the structure, policies, programs, regulations, practices and functions of medical agencies; ability to conduct library research and to gather relevant information and data in field and office settings; ability to prepare graphs, tables and charts; ability to analyze facts and to exercise judgment and self-initiative; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of technical, professional, administrative and support personnel in diverse organizations; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
(a) Graduation from a college with
federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State with a Bachelor's
Degree, including eighteen (18) credits in the natural sciences; or,
(b) Completion of sixty (60) credits
from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY
State, including eighteen (18) credits in the natural sciences, and two (2)
years of experience in developing and performing research studies; or,
(c) Graduation from a standard
senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and four
(4) years of experience in developing and performing research studies, two (2)
years of which must have involved medical and/or scientific studies; or,
(d) An equivalent combination of
education and experience as defined by the
limits of (a),
(b) and (c).
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
At the time of
appointment and during employment in this title, employees must possess a valid
license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
