DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Conducts surveys and research studies to ascertain the nature of effective supervision and leadership for the Suffolk County Civil Service department. Analyzes factors affecting morale, motivation, and productivity.  Assists in the implementation of recommendations.  Observes details of work and interviews workers and supervisors to establish physical, mental, educational, and other job requirements.  Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel and is received through conferences and written reports.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Designs questionnaires and standard interview formats;

            Counsels workers to improve job and personal adjustments;

            Investigates problems related to the physical environment of work, such as illumination, noise, temperature, and ventilation;

            May conduct management development sessions and participate in organization development activities;

           

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough knowledge of psychological tests and measurements; thorough knowledge of personality development and of the factors which contribute to morale and job satisfaction; good knowledge of employee training problems and methods of management and organizational development; good knowledge of the sources of information and current literature in the field of Industrial Psychology; ability to exercise sound judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to analyze and evaluate personnel administration and management and to make practical recommendations concerning solution of problems; ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, and to present ideas effectively to individuals and groups; ability to prepare and maintain complex records and reports.           

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university, with a Masters Degree in Industrial, Organizational, Applied, or Clinical Psychology, and two years experience applying psychological principles to organizations or interpersonal problems.

           

NOTE:  Additional relevant education from a New York State or regionally accredited college or university will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.
