DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises or independently performs difficult clerical work in the circulation, reference cataloging or administrative department of a library.  The incumbent receives general instructions from a Librarian and /or Principal Library Clerk and then plans, assigns and reviews the work of a small number of clerical workers.  In the absence of supervisory responsibilities, the Senior Library Clerk performs more difficult clerical work that requiring a higher degree of skill, experience and independent judgment.  Unusual or very difficult procedures or questions are referred to the Librarian in charge of the department for decision.  Work is reviewed by a Librarian and /or Principal Library Clerk through personal conferences and periodic observation of the effectiveness of clerical operations. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assigns and supervises the clerical duties of Office Assistants, Library Clerks, and Pages upon receiving instructions from a Librarian and/or Principal Library Clerk; assists in training new clerical employees in library procedures;

            Supervises the charging and discharging of books, registering borrow­ers, collecting fines, reserving books and answering routine questions concern­ing the library's collection and services while working at circulation and reference desks;        

            Oversees preparation of overdue notices and catalog cards; files shelf list cards; oversees the processing of new library materials; oversees preparation of books and magazines for the bindery;

            Maintains circulation, attendance, personnel and payroll records; may assist in the preparation of bills, purchase orders, payrolls and statistical reports for main and branch libraries;

            Helps prepare library displays and exhibits;

            May operate standard office machines as requested.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of general library and office terminology, clerical proce­dures and equipment; good knowledge of business English, spelling and arithme­tic; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to assign, supervise and review the work of a small group of clerical employees in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to make arithmetical computations accurately and with reasonable speed; ability to establish effective working relationships with superiors, coworkers and library patrons; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four (4) years of clerical experience in a public, private, industrial or school library.

                                                                 

NOTE:  Relevant additional education from a college with federally-authorized accreditation or registration by NY State will be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            Two (2) years permanent competitive status as an Office Assistant, Library Clerk,

Office Assistant (Spanish Speaking) or Library Clerk (Spanish Speaking).
