FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in
this class assists the Literacy Volunteer Program Coordinator in the operation
of a volunteer literacy program conducted in a public library or a community
facility. The incumbent helps develop
and implement library programs for Spanish-speaking literacy students. Work
is performed under the direction of the Literacy Volunteer Program Coordinator
and reviewed through meetings and program assessments. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Assists the Literacy Volunteer
Program Coordinator in developing and maintaining the operation of a volunteer
literacy program for Spanish-speaking students held in a public library or a community facility;
Oversees the efficient operation of
off-site library literacy classes held throughout the community;
Plans and conducts large group
citizenship tutoring sessions in Spanish and English on a weekly basis at the
library;
Plans, develops and conducts
conversation group sessions for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students
at the library;
Helps implement computer-assisted
learning and distance learning education programs for
waiting list literacy
applicants;
Interviews, tests and evaluates
potential literacy students at the public library and in the community for the
library’s literacy program;
Assists the Literacy Volunteer
Program Coordinator in matching tutor and student pairs for volunteer literacy
tutors.
May
act as a liaison between class instructors, literacy students, their families
and the library;
May supervise Community Service
Aides working in a literacy program administered by the library.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
the methods and goals of a literacy program within a public library; knowledge
of current literature sources of information related to literacy programs; ability
to read, write and converse fluently in the Spanish and English languages;
ability to establish effective working relationships with the public, library
staff, coworkers, volunteers and public agencies; ability to express oneself
clearly; ability to match the strength of tutors with the needs of
participants; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Either:
a) Graduation from
a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma,
and two (2) years of experience working in a library literacy office; or,
b) Graduation from
a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency
diploma, and two
(2) years of experience working as a volunteer in a literacy program; or,
c) An equivalent combination of education and
experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENTS
At the time of
appointment and throughout employment in this title, employees are required to
possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
There will be a
qualifying Spanish language examination.
