DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work performed while attending an accredited library school develops gradually to professional level.  The employee is under the supervision and guidance of professional librarians and learns library procedures, techniques and skills.  The appointment of a Librarian Trainee is limited to a maximum of four years. 

 

All permanent competitive Librarian Trainees must complete a twenty-six week probationary period. Eligibility to hold this title terminates upon being awarded the degree of Master of Library Science (MLS), or the Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS). Upon being awarded the degree, the permanent competitive Librarian Trainee achieves permanent competitive status as a Librarian I without further examination.  A Librarian Trainee who obtains either the MLS or the MSIS degree in less than twenty-six weeks from the date of appointment completes this probationary period as a Librarian I.  Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assists in provision of library informational, reference and referral services;

            Assists in compilation of book lists;

            Assists in conducting book talks, multimedia programs, story and picture book hours, and liaison activities with community groups;

            Helps perform readers’ advisory and guidance services;

            Helps prepare library exhibits and displays;

            Helps provide basic technology assistance to library patrons;

            Learns to catalogue and classify library materials;

            May direct library pages and other nonprofessional personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Enrollment in an American Library Association accredited or New York State registered library school program, completion of which will qualify the applicant for either a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS), or for a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS).

 

NOTES: The trainee period in any one library or combination of libraries may not exceed four (4) continuous or cumulative calendar years.  Part-time employment is not pro-rated and does not extend this four (4) year maximum.

 

Upon the request of the employing library, the four year limitation may be extended under extenuating circumstances. The employee must demonstrate current enrollment in a required degree program with an identified completion date.
