FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class
performs professional-level librarian duties in one or more areas of a public
library. Supervision may be exercised
over nonprofessional staff, and the incumbent may participate in the training
of Librarian Trainees. The work is
reviewed by a higher-level librarian or administrator through conferences,
reports and observation. An employee may
be granted permanent competitive status in this title after successfully
completing no more than four years of permanent competitive service as a
Librarian Trainee or may be appointed Librarian I from an open- competitive
list. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK
ACTIVITIES
Provides advisory and guidance
services to library patrons;
Provides library informational,
reference and referral services;
Provides basic technology assistance
to library patrons;
Performs routine cataloging and
classification of library materials;
Compiles bibliographies; selects or
assists in the selection of books and other library materials;
Conducts book talks, multimedia
programs, story and picture book hours, and liaison activities with community
groups;
Prepares library exhibits, displays
and publicity materials for library programs;
May supervise the work of
nonprofessional staff and participate in the training of Librarian Trainees;
Attends conferences, workshops and
in-service training sessions to keep informed of professional developments.
FULL PERFORMANCE
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of
modern public library organization, materials, methods and services; good
knowledge of the employing library's policies and procedures; good knowledge of
bibliographical tools and sources; good knowledge of the needs and makeup of
the library district's population; ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, library patrons, members of
professional library organizations and community groups; ability and
willingness to participate in cultural and intellectual activities of the
community; ability to provide basic technology assistance to library patrons;
ability to supervise the work of others in a manner conducive to full
performance and high morale; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally
and in writing; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with
the demands of the position.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
A) A Master's Degree in Library
Science (MLS), or a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) from a
library school program that is accredited by the American Library Association
or registered by the New York State Education Department; or
B) A valid New York State Public
Librarian's Professional Certificate.
NECESSARY SPECIAL
REQUIREMENT
Eligibility for a
New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate at the time of
appointment and possession of the certificate within 26 weeks of appointment;
appointees must maintain a valid certification throughout their employment in
this title.
