DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs professional-level librarian duties in one or more areas of a public library.  The work may be specialized in nature or may consist of the more difficult tasks in more than one area.  A Librarian II may also assume responsibility for administration of a specialized program or serve as a department head in a small library. Supervision may be exercised over professional and nonprofessional staff, and the incumbent may participate in the training of Librarian Trainees.  The work is reviewed by a higher-level librarian or administrator through conferences, reports and observation.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

            Assigns and reviews the work of professional and nonprofessional staff, and may participate in the training of Librarian Trainees;

            Provides difficult advisory and guidance services to library patrons;

            Provides library informational, reference and referral services;

            Provides technology assistance to library patrons;

            Performs original cataloging and classification of library materials;

            Compiles bibliographies;

            Participates in the development of collections of books and other library materials;

            Develops and conducts library programs; plans and participates in liaison activities with community groups;

            Plans and prepares publicity materials for library programs in both printed and electronic formats;

            Attends conferences, workshops and in-service training sessions to keep informed of professional developments.

Thorough knowledge of modern public library organization, materials, methods and services; thorough knowledge of the employing library's policies and procedures; thorough knowledge of bibliographical tools and sources; thorough knowledge of the needs and makeup of the library district's population; ability to suggest improvements in services and collections; ability to supervise the work of professional and nonprofessional personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, library patrons, members of professional library organizations and community groups; ability and willingness to participate in cultural and intellectual activities of the community; ability to provide technology assistance to patrons; ability to express oneself clearly, both orally and in writing; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

            OPEN COMPETITIVE

            Possession of a valid New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate, and two (2) years of experience as a professional librarian (professional experience is defined as experience gained after being awarded a Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS), or a Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) or a valid New York State Public Librarian's Professional Certificate.)

 

            PROMOTIONAL

            One (1) year of permanent competitive status as a Librarian I, Librarian I (Spanish Speaking) or Librarian I (Children’s Services).

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Appointees must maintain a valid New York State Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate throughout employment in this title.
