DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under general supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for collecting, evaluating, systemizing, preserving, and making available for reference public records and documents. The employee administers one or more specialized collections of books, manuscripts, letters, memorabilia, maps, historical records, local newspapers, photographs and other pertinent materials. The materials within the collection are catalogued and arranged for display and reference use. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance of manuscript, microfilm and photograph files and for doing reference work so that materials may be ordered and responses sent to inquiries from library patrons. Supervision is received through conferences and observation of displays. Does related work as required.
Preserves public
records and documents;
Plans the selection
and acquisition of materials;
Arranges collections
of materials for display;
Responds to inquiries
about the collection and researches materials in response to letters.
Performs reference
work for the purchase of materials;
Prepares and maintains
a system of descriptive cataloging for collections;
Manages files or manuscripts,
microfilm, photographs, newspapers, historical records and other materials;
Makes field trips to
evaluate collections and arranges for their acquisition.

CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of library techniques; good knowledge of
bibliographical tools and resources; good knowledge of the methods and
procedures of material acquisition and display; good knowledge of the value and
historical significance of items to be acquired for library collections; ability to express oneself clearly and
concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to plan and coordinate displays
and resource files; ability to comprehend users' needs quickly and accurately;
physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Graduation from a New
York State or regionally accredited college or university with a Master's
Degree in Library Science, History or a related field, and two (2) years of
professional archival experience.
NOTE:
Specific course-work in archival studies may be substituted for up to
one (1) year of experience.
